Using unrelated external table in a report

Hi
Can anyone tell me how to use a field from an unrelated external table in a report I designed in my application?

Many Thanks for always helping and kind regards

Hi Tony,
Did you import this unrelated external table in your dictionary ?
Pierre-Jean

Thanks. Yes I have the table in my dictionary but not related to the main application.

Kind regards

As this table is in the dictionary, your report is able to load it.
Can you give more details about:

  • this unrelated table: fields, index ?
  • what do you want to do in this report with this table ?

You would add your “external” file as an “other” file in your report procedure. Then in the process manager (process class) embed for TakeRecord, before you do anything else you grab the row in the external table that corresponds to whatever else you are processing, like:

ext.ID = myf:external_id
access:External.Fetch(ext:someuniquekey)

and you add whatever column from the external table to your report definition.

It’s not a very efficient way of doing things, but…

if that worries you maybe loading the external table (or some part of it) into a queue before you start might work better. In that case you would get the appropriate row from the queue rather than from the file.

Thanks so much Jon. Will give it a try.
