Better specs for SQL Express 2025

SQL Express 2025 lifts the cap on individual databases to 50GB. (Still restricted to 1 socket or 4 cores).

Nice. But I’ll still stick with PostgreSQL

A funny thing happened. I installed it a few of days ago on a VirtualBox VM on a separate computer I’m setting up. Took me a while to get it running and connected but all working well with an existing database I restored from backup.

Now my original installation of SQL Server 2019, on my old PC, no longer runs! Fortunately my new PC is just about ready to use so I’ll be OK.

If I remember correctly, my initial free version of the Oracle database, which would have been in the late 80s and came on a bunch of 3.5" floppies, was limited to 5MB. It worked for me, but only just, because the 5MB did not only include user data, it also included the metadata – all the system tables – and they took up about 1MB. Times have changed a bit.
