Need some help with Clarion program

Hello,
We are a small London based retail company that has a custom made stock control program / database made using Clarion, It was created about 15 years ago and has been extended over the years.
Sadly the guy who has done this for us has passed away and although the progam is working fine it needs a bit of a tidy up and perhaps things added in the future.
We do not have the source code for the program but we do not forsee any major changes
George

Without source code, nothing can really be done. Certainly no changes.
I suggest you get hold of the estate of the old programmer and see if it’s available to purchase.

Who was the programmer?

Hi George,

you really need someone to have a look at your system to see if you do have the necessary source files, or not? If you are sure that you don’t have the source files then perhaps, as Sean suggested, you can get them from the estate, or family of your programmer?

An experienced Clarion developer, on-site, or with remote access to your system, will be able to determine if anything can be done and give you guidelines on your best course of action.

Hi George,

Just to add to what others have said, at a worst case scenario you could probably get another Clarion developer who could take a copy of your app (to see what it did visually), and the data files and be able to create a new app for you that could be maintained.

The tools have gotten better but the mechanics of a Clarion program (and it’s data files) have not changed so significantly that it couldn’t be done.

Charles

I would be happy to take a look at what you have and advise you of what can be done.

Obtain the deceased’s computer from the children or relatives.
Look for the .app files, which are the Clarion source code.

Repeating what others have said but here goes. If your programmer delivered latest version of the program (say) 3 months ago then your best way forward would be obtaining a copy of their clarion development environment from that time. Minimally, all .app files you can get your hands on.

Fact you don’t expect major changes is prett much (sorry Charles) irrelevant, focus on trying to get the source code if you can.

Times like this are difficult, but in my experience family/estate will be open to discussing the idea once some time has passed. Don’t leave it too long, discuss and accept remuneration costs, get hold of the source and move on. Plenty of people here willing to work with you once that happens.
