Skype Shutdown in 2025 – What’s Next for Our Clarion Community Chats?

Hey everyone,

As many of you may have heard, Microsoft has announced that Skype will be discontinued on May 5, 2025. This means that all Skype services, including group chats, will no longer be available. Many of us rely on Skype for our Clarion discussions, so we need to start considering alternative platforms to keep our community connected.

What This Means

  • Skype group chats will no longer be available. Many Clarion developers use Skype for real-time discussions, troubleshooting, and networking. We need to find a new platform where we can continue these conversations.
  • Some members may be impacted by the loss of Skype In and Out, but our main concern is ensuring our chat groups have a new home.
  • Microsoft is pushing users toward Teams, but it’s not a direct replacement for casual, open-ended developer discussions.

Alternative Options

Here are some potential replacements for our Clarion Skype chats, along with possible downsides:

  1. Discord – Offers persistent chat history, topic-based channels, and voice/video calls. Many communities have successfully migrated here.
Downsides: Can feel overwhelming for new users, requires account creation, and advanced features may require a paid subscription.

  2. Slack – Provides structured discussions, integrations, and searchable chat history.
Downsides: Free tier has a message history limit (10,000 messages), some features are locked behind a paid plan.

  3. Telegram – Supports large groups, works across multiple devices, and allows file sharing and pinned messages.
Downsides: Requires phone number for account creation, and group moderation tools are somewhat limited compared to other platforms.

  4. WhatsApp Communities – Useful for those already using WhatsApp.
Downsides: Requires sharing phone numbers, and chat history can be difficult to manage for larger groups.

  5. Discourse Chat (on this forum!) – Our Discourse forum has a chat feature. Should we consider using it as our primary alternative?
Downsides: May not be as real-time or interactive as dedicated chat apps, and could require additional setup or adjustments.

Your Thoughts?

We’d love to hear from the community about this transition. If you’re active in the Skype groups, what do you think would work best? Are there any other platforms we should consider?

Let’s work together to find the best solution to keep our Clarion discussions active and accessible.

Maybe a better question to ask is what do you want feature-wise out of your chat system in 2025?

Freeswitch with mod_sms with a bit of work can be used to create a chat system like XMPP

and mod_dptools SMS can be hooked up as a interface for those sleeping rough, or hiking/camping in the back country and only has access to a simple phone, or a smart phone (iphone in North America currently) using the built in satellite messaging or even a satellite phone.

OR

you have XMPP the Universal messaging system.

I’ve had Freeswitch running on a Raspberrypi 2B, its that light weight for a low number of connections, for lots of connections run it on a Xeon rack server with some nearby cheap Dark Fibre and DWDM.

Another option is Signal, it is comparable with WhatsApp. The downsides are probably the same, but the advantage is the privacy which is much better.

I would suggest Slack or Discord. Slack has a cleaner interface and their thread handling is far superior, but Discord is accessible and still free. The Microsoft Teams UI is still clunky and it’s easy to lose track of messages you actually want to see.

Just my two cents.

Things I’d like to see in the (skype) replacement

  • Is Reliable
  • Is Quick
  • Phone AND PC Support
  • Chat history (the longer the better)
  • Free (or cheap enough, not paid per user)
  • Good Search tools
  • Translation tools
  • Threads might be a plus, depends on the ui
  • Ability to post images
  • Ease of use, to share files
  • fun to have tenor images etc.
  • Ability to control notifications
  • Would be nice to have easy rich text for chats
  • Would be wonderful to have source code formatting that knows clarion
  • ability to post in a monospaced font
  • Easy to have multiple accounts (work and personal)
  • Private Messages
  • ability to edit messages after they have been posted

Some things that skype does, but I do believe are NOT important for our group chats

  • voice calls to skype, cell phones and landlines
  • ability to send TXT messages
  • screen sharing
